A versatile draughtsman and writer, Bentley's friendship with Horace Walpole's resulted in his membership of a Committee of Taste to renovate Walpole's home at Strawberry Hill. As well as producing architectural elevations for the house in a Gothic style, he painted landscapes and allegorical designs. He also produced book illustrations and wrote plays and satires. He was nicknamed 'the Goth' by Horace Walpole.
