Edward Burra (1905-1976), Painter

Edward John Burra

Sitter in 3 portraits
Artist of 3 portraits
Painter. Born in London, Burra studied at Chelsea and the Royal College of Art (1921-5). He suffered from chronic arthritis which made painting in oils too painful therefore he worked in watercolour on a large scale. He was often inspired by his travels abroad. A journey to New York produced a series of wry paintings of Harlem and Burra was among the first to respond to emergent African-American urban culture. He was one of few artists to record the impact of motorways on the English landscape.
