Primarily a painter of landscapes, de Grey studied art at the Chelsea Polytechnic. He taught at the Royal College of Art from 1954, the year of his first one-man show. Principal of the City and Guilds of London Art School from 1973, de Grey was President of the Royal Academy between 1984 and 1993.
