One of the leading actresses of her generation, Dench trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, joining the Old Vic Company in 1957. An associate member of the Royal Shakespeare Comany since 1969, Dench has appeared in productions including Twelfth Night, The Winter's Tale and Much Ado About Nothing. Film appearances include A Room with a View (1985) and Oscar nominated performances in Iris (2001), Chocolat (2000), Mrs. Brown (1997) and Notes on a Scandal (2006). She won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Oscars in 1999 for Shakespeare in Love. Dench has appeared as 'M' in the recent James Bond films, in the TV series Cranford (2007-09) and Jane Eyre (2011).
