Sir Andrew Fielding Huxley
(1917-2012), PhysiologistSitter in 9 portraits
Physiologist; Professor of Physiology, University College London (1960-83); President, Royal Society (1980-5). With Alan Hodgkin and John Eccles, Huxley was the winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1963 for work on the 'sodium pump' mechanism by which nerve impulses are transmitted. Knighted 1974, awarded OM 1983.
