Born in London, Kossoff studied at St Martin's School of Art, the Royal College of Art and the Borough Polytechnic under David Bomberg, whose expressionist style was a lasting influence. Kossoff's subjects are portraits, London cityscapes and interiors and his paint is applied in a thick, impasto style. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1995 and had a major retrospective at the Tate Gallery the following year.
