Brother of artist Paul Nash who advised him to avoid formal training to preserve the exciting originality of his work. Nash taught at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford and subsequently at the Royal College of Art. He played an important role in the renaissance of English book illustration. He was a member of the London Group and the New English Art Club. He was elected RA in 1951 and in 1967 was given the first ever retrospective exhibition of a living painter at the Royal Academy.
