Sculptor. Born of Italian parents in Leith, Paolozzi went to Edinburgh College of Art and the Slade School of Art (1944-7). One of the founders of the Independent Group in 1952, he exhibited in This is Tomorrow at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1956. His use of collage and imagery, derived from comic strips, advertising and industrial machinery, is closely associated with the formation of Pop Art. in London in the 1950s. He designed the mosaics at Tottenham Court Road Underground Station (1983-5).
