Sculptor. Born to Italian parents in Leith, Paolozzi studied at both the Edinburgh College, and Slade School of Art between the years 1943-7. In 1952, after spending several years working in Paris, Paolozzi was one of the founding members of the Independent Group in London. This lead to his inclusion in the exhibition This is Tomorrow at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1956. Paolozzi's use of collage and imagery, derived from comic strips, advertising and industrial machinery, is closely associated with the formation of Pop Art in London in the 1950s. He also designed the mosaic installed on the walls of Tottenham Court Road Underground Station (1983-5).
