One of the great Venetian decorative painters, he worked at many European courts, visiting England 1708-13 and 1719, where he decorated various country houses, introducing the lighter style of the rococo. He submitted designs for the dome of St Paul's and by tradition is said to have been Wren's favoured painter. 'A talle, proper man of a great deal of fire and vivacity', according to Vertue.
