Elizabeth Longford, the biographer and historian, was considered as one of the most brilliant women of her generation, producing authoritative biographies of Joseph 'Radical Joe' Chamberlain, the Duke of Wellington and Queen Victoria. Combining her own work with supporting her husband's political career in the Labour party, she was also the mother of eight children.
