Writer and journalist, Foot was educated at Shrewsbury School and at Oxford University where he contributed to Mesopotamia. Foot adopted a far-left political view as a journalist for the Glasgow Daily Record and following a short period working for the Sun and the Sunday Telegraph joined the Private Eye team full-time in 1967. Alongside that of Claud Cockburn, Foot's investigative journalism was published under 'Footnotes' and counterbalanced the magazine's sharp satire. Foot worked for the Socialist Worker (1972-8) and the Daily Mirror (1979-91) before re-joining the staff of Private Eye under the editorship of Ian Hislop.
