Hans Hysing

(1678-1752 or 1753), Portrait painter

Sitter in 1 portrait
Artist associated with 37 portraits
Hans Hysing was a Swedish painter, active in England. He was apprenticed in Sweden to a goldsmith, before studying portrait painting under David von Krafft. In 1700 he joined his compatriot Michael Dahl in London and lived with him for some years as pupil and studio assistant. By 1715, he was working independently. Unlike Dahl, whose chief patrons were Tories, Hysing was favoured by both the Hanoverian royal family and the Whig ascendancy. He painted full-length portraits of Princess Anne, Princess Amelia and Princess Caroline, as well as portraits of Sir Robert Walpole and Richard Onslow, Speaker of the House of Commons.
