Francis Henry Crittall

Manufacturer. Crittall started in the family ironmonger's shop in Braintree, Essex. His business in metal window frames was so successful that his name passed into the language. 'Crittall Windows' described a type of standard window frame that contributed significantly to the look of new suburbs. A philanthropic employer, Crittall built the garden village of Silver End for his employees. During the First World War, his factories provided munitions and he campaigned against the monopoly of the 'armaments ring'.
