Berlin-born artist, Auerbach was sent to England by his parents as a refugee from Nazi Germany in 1939. Taking British nationality in 1947, Auerbach trained at Saint Martin's School of Art (1948-52) and the Royal College of Art (1952-5). The artist's style is distinctive; thickly impastoed paintings and heavily worked drawings. His subjects are limited to a handful of close friends and family and North London landscapes.
