Drama critic; contributed reviews to Daily Dispatch (1906); went on to become a highly influential critic for both The Sunday TImes (1923-47) and the BBC (1925-32); his diaries, published in nine volumes under the title Ego (1935-48) vividly evoke the personalities and the cultural life of his day.
