Charles John Allen (1862-1956), Sculptor

Allen was apprenticed to the architectural sculptors, Farmer & Brindley, in about 1879. He studied at the Lambeth School of Art and, from 1887, at the Royal Academy Schools. He then worked for the sculptor, Hamo Thornycroft, for four years. In 1894 he was appointed Instructor in Sculpture and Modelling at Liverpool School of Architecture and Applied Arts (later Liverpool School of Art). He remained at the School of Art until his retirement as vice-principal in 1927. Allen's architectural and monumental sculpture is concentrated in Liverpool and includes figurative sculpture for the Royal Insurance Company Building (1896-1902) and the Victoria Monument (1902-6).
