William Thomas Fry

(1789-1843), Engraver

Artist associated with 62 portraits
Relatively little is known of the portrait and figure engraver William Thomas Fry. From 1824 until 1830, he exhibited with the Society of British Artists. He worked mainly in stipple, but also produced aquatints and lithographs. Between 1829 and 1835, Fry engraved eight portraits for the second edition of Edmund Lodge's Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain. He also contributed four plates to Fisher's National Portrait Gallery(1830-34) and eleven to Jones's National Gallery (1836). He was one of the first engravers to experiment with steel plates.
