Charles Wellington Furse

Charles Wellington Furse was the son of C.W. Furse, archdeacon of Westminster, and was a distant relative of Joshua Reynolds. He entered the Slade School of Art in 1884, winning the Slade scholarship in the following year, and completed his education at Julian's atelier in Paris. Furse opened a portrait studio in Chelsea in the early 1890s. By the turn of the century, he had gained a reputation as a highly successful portrait painter. However, by this time his health was seriously impaired by the tuberculosis from which he suffered; he died at the young age of thirty-six.
