Walker Hodgson(1864-active 1923)
(William) Walker Hodgson
Artist of 12 portraits
Little is known about Hodgson and he does not feature in the literature on late nineteenth-century artists. However, unpublished family research reveals that the young graphic artist arrived in London from Newcastle upon Tyne in 1889 when he was commissioned by a publisher to produce an album of portraits of artists whose paintings had been exhibited at the Royal Academy in the 1880s. Some of these works were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1892. A portion of Hodgson’s portraits of artists and cultural figures have been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery and a short essay on these by Elizabeth Heath is available here. Hodgson was the subject of an exhibition at the Christopher Wood Gallery in 1984.
