James Holmes

(1777-1860), Miniature painter

Artist associated with 23 portraits
Holmes was apprenticed to the engraver R.M. Meadows; he entered the Royal Academy schools in 1796. After his studies, Holmes turned his attention away from engraving and focused on painting portraits in watercolour. He spent some time in Worcester, painting portraits and teaching drawing, and he returned to London as a popular painting instructor. Holmes's miniatures gained in popularity to the point where he was able to give up teaching. He became a member of the Associated Artists in Water Colours and exhibited twenty-two works with them between 1808 and 1812. In 1824, he was a founder member of the Society of British Artists, of which he was president in 1829, and exhibited with them for nearly thirty years.
