Gerrit van Honthorst was a Dutch painter from Utrecht. He travelled to Italy in 1616, where he copied the naturalism and eccentricities of Caravaggio. Honthorst spent four years painting in Rome after which he returned to Utrecht and set up a successful painting school. The queen of Bohemia, sister of Charles I and electress palatine, an exile in the Netherlands, appointed him as drawing master to her children. He became known to her brother Charles, who in 1628 invited Honthorst to England to paint his portrait. In 1637, he became court painter to the princess of Orange and settled at The Hague.
