Hope-Johnstone was briefly tutor to the children of artist Augustus John. He worked for a time as co-editor of The Gramophone with Compton Mackenzie, and as editor of the Burlington Magazine, until sacked by Roger Fry. He spent the winter of 1922 with Gerald Brenan at his house in southern Spain, with the intention to 'master the art of photography'. To this end he imported 'several hundredweight of photographic materials'. He photographed Brenan and Augustus John and his family.
