Anton Raphael Mengs
(1728-1779), ArtistArtist associated with 10 portraits
Anton Raphael Mengs was an eminent German painter, active in Rome, Madrid and Saxony, who became one of the precursors to neo-classical painting. He received his earliest training in Dresden from his father, Ismael Mengs, a Danish painter. In 1741 Mengs accompanied his father to Rome, where his fresco painting of Parnassus at Villa Albani gained him a reputation as a master painter. In 1749 he was appointed painter to Frederick Augustus, Elector of Saxony, but continued to spend much of his time in Rome. Mengs earned a considerable reputation as a portraitist, painting many of the leading visitors to Rome. On two occasions he travelled to Spain to paint members of the family of the king, Charles III.
