James Rannie Swinton

(1816-1888), Portrait painter

Artist associated with 63 portraits
James Rannie Swinton studied art at Edinburgh's Trustee's Academy before moving to London in 1840 and enrolling at the Royal Academy schools. Later the same year he travelled to Italy, where he remained for the next three years. In Rome, he established himself as a popular portrait painter, specialising in the portrayal of fashionable society ladies. On returning to London Swinton soon became one of the most sought after portrait painters of the day. He painted many society ladies and eminent men including Louis Napoleon, later Napoleon III. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy from 1844 until 1874.
