William Wissing was a Dutch portrait artist. He studied at The Hague under Willem Doudijns and Arnold Van Ravestyn. By 1676, Wissing had settled in England, where he worked as assistant to Sir Peter Lely. After Lely's death in 1680, he established a successful independent career, becoming one of the leading portraitists of his day. Wissing's royal sitters include Charles II, Queen Catharine of Braganza, Prince George of Denmark and James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth. His works were widely reproduced; the vast majority, made by engravers including John Smith, Isaac Beckett, and R. Williams, were published by Edward Cooper.
