Philippe Halsman was born in Latvia and began his photographic career in Paris in the early 1930s. He arrived in the United States in 1940, just after the fall of France, having obtained an emergency visa through the intervention of Albert Einstein. From the 1940s to the 1970s, he was one of America's pre-eminent photographers. His work has been published widely, in particular in Life magazine; he holds the record for the most Lifecovers, 101 in all. He was the author of many books, including Philippe Halsman's Jump Book and Dali's Mustache.
