Born in Wales, Peter Edwards' first portrait to enter the collection was of the Liverpool Poets Adrian Henri, Roger McGough and Brian Patten; another portrait of the poet Seamus Heaney led to a one-man show of contemporary poets at the Gallery in 1990. In 1991 he painted for the Gallery a life-size portrait of Sir Bobby Charlton and after winning the BP Portrait Award in 1994 Edwards was commissioned to paint Kazuo Ishiguro.
