William James Topley

After spending some time as an itinerant photographer, Topley joined William Notman's studio in Montreal in 1854. He was later sent to Ottawa to establish a branch studio, which he subsequently bought from Notman. As well as portraits, he also sold topographic views of Ottawa and other regions of Canada.
