Pyke moved to London in 1977. He was a singer in a number of bands and was involved with establishing a record label and fanzines. In 1979 he became a photographer and from 1981 to 1984 worked for The Face and NME. Now living in New York, he has been staff photographer at The New Yorker since 2004 and a contributor since 1998. He has developed a number of personal projects, the best known of which is his collection of Philosophers. He recently completed his series Astronauts. For the past two decades, he has worked on his series of Faces of our Times. Pyke's photographs have been exhibited widely around the world and are held in many international collections.
