The portrait painter, Thomas Hardy, born in Derbyshire, entered the School of Painting at the Royal Academy in 1778 and exhibited at the Royal Academy (1778-98), including portraits of the musicians, Joseph Haydn, Johann Peter Salomon and Wilhelm Cramer. Hardy engraved some of his own work.
