Gerald Ogilvie-Laing

Born in Newcastle, Laing served in the Royal Military Academy and Royal Northumberland Fusiliers before studying at St Martin's. Strongly identifying with American Pop, he moved to New York in 1964, staying until 1969. Here he developed a personal iconography from mass-media sources, mixing figurative and graphic elements. His representations of femmes fatales, bathing beauties, astronauts and skydivers constitute a picture of idealized lifestyle that captured the American Dream. Laing had solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Richard Feigen Gallery (1964). His retrospectives include those at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (1971) and the Herbert Art Gallery (1983).
