Paul Brason studied at Camberwell College of Art. He began exhibiting his paintings in 1977. He exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery's Annual Portrait Awards between 1980 and 1994, receiving a special commendation in 1983. In 2000 he was elected President of the Society of Portrait Painters.
