Paula Rego was born in Portugal in 1935 and at age seventeen came to England where she studied at the Slade (1952-56). She later returned to the Slade in 1983 as a visiting lecturer in painting. Her first solo exhibition was in 1981 at the AIR Gallery, London. Numerous solo exhibitions have followed, including at the Serpentine, 1988, at Marlborough Fine Art, 1994, at the Saatchi Gallery, 1994, and at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, 1998. She was appointed first National Gallery Associated Artist in 1990-1. In 1997 she held a retrospective of her work at the Tate Gallery, Liverpool. Her powerful figurative works often convey an intense psychological drama.
