Sir Francis Avery Jones (1910-1998), Physician and gastroenterologist

Educated in Suffolk, and trained in St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, Jones was employed during the Second World War as a physician at the Central Middlesex Hospital, where he was soon in charge of the hospital's wartime medical arrangements. After the war, Jones expanded his research into stomach ulcers, building up an outstanding research department at Central Middlesex , that attracted students from all over the world. Among his many other contributions are setting up the Meals on Wheels service, his involvement in the King's Fund (a medical think tank) and his strong support for nutritional studies.
