Sir Donald Irvine

(1935-2018), Physician and writer on general practice

Sitter in 1 portrait
A pioneer of good management in family medicine, Donald Irvine started as a general practitioner in a Northumberland mining community just as general practice was changing from a cottage industry to today's modern specialism, with teams housed in purpose-built health centres. He also had a major role in the evolution of medical ethics, and was the first general practitioner to be president of the General Medical Council.
