Stage, film and television director. Director of the Nottingham Playhouse before becoming Associate Director (1981-8) and Artistic Director of the Royal National Theatre (1988-97). Among his National Theatre productions have been Racing Demon (1990), Night of the Iguana (1992) and Amy's View (1997). His films include The Ploughman's Lunch and Iris (2001), for which he also wrote the screenplay.
