Introduced to fashion aged 16 through a job at a local clothing warehouse in his hometown of Nottingham, Paul Smith opened his first shop there in 1970 and began taking evening classes for tailoring. Now a wholesaler in 34 countries with 12 collections sold in locations worldwide. Member of the Design Council and the Government appointed Creative Industries Taskforce; knighted 2000.
