Prince Ranji, as he was popularly known was educated at Rajkumar College, Rajkot in India and at Trinity College, Cambridge where he first seriously took up cricket and received his 'Blue'. He joined the Sussex team in l895 and played for England against Australia, scoring eventually 24,000 runs in his first class cricket career (Punch dubbed him 'Run-Get-Sinjhi'). He succeeded his cousin in 1906 as Maharaja and did much to develop and rebuild Nawanagar. In World War One Ranji raised troops and served at the Front (1914-15). He twice represented the ruling Princes of India at League of Nations, was a delegate at the 1930 Round Table Conference and helped found the Chamber of Princes (1921) of which he became Chancellor in 1932.
