Peter Brough
(1906-1999), VentriloquistSitter in 5 portraits
Ventriloquist. Both Peter Brough and his father worked in the textile trade as well as being ventriloquists. After a slow start in wartime variety and radio, Brough found success with Educating Archie, first broadcast on 6 June 1950. It was immediately recognised as a classic radio comedy (and from 1858 an ITV series). The knowing schoolboy dummy and his stepfather (Brough) were BBC announcer by a host of comedy stars including Sid James and Tony Hancock. The programme also featured Julie Andrews' singing debut.
