From 1974 to 1977 Earl studied Art at Trent Polytechnic; he won a photography scholarship to study in Baltimore, where he was influenced by American colour photography. In 1978 Earl was offered a show at the Photographer's Gallery in London and the following year represented Britain in the Venice Biennale. Malcolm McLaren commissioned Earl to do a cover for a Bow Wow Wow album. A hugely successful career within the international music business followed, including over twenty music videos.
