Caryl Phillips

Award-winning author, stage and screen writer. Born in St. Kitts in the Caribbean, Phillips arrived to England as a four month-old baby. He grew up in Leeds and attended Oxford University, graduating with a degree in English Literature. His plays include Strange Fruit (1980) and Where There is Darkness (1982). Since the mid-1980s he has mainly written fiction, including Crossing the River (1993, Booker Prize shortlist) and The Nature of Blood (1997). A Distant Shore was longlisted for the 2003 Booker Prize, and won the 2004 Commonwealth Writers Prize, whilst Dancing in the Dark won the 2006 PEN/Open Book Award. He is presently Professor of English at Yale University.
