Novelist. Doris Lessing was born in Iran, brought up in Zimbabwe and since 1949 has lived in Britain. Lessing's first novel, The Grass is Singing (1950), was followed by numerous novels and short stories including The Golden Notebook (1962). She was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature and her most recent publication is Alfred and Emily (2008).
