Artist associated with 25 portraits
Sir Robert Strange studied art for six years in Edinburgh, under Richard Cooper. He fought with the Jacobites in the civil wars after which he escaped to France and completed his studies in Paris under engraver J.P. Le Bas. Strange returned to London in 1751, where he established himself as one of the country's pre-eminent engravers. In the 1760s, he spent four years working in Italy, during which time he was elected a member of the academies of Rome, Florence, Bologna, Parma and Paris. During his career, Strange made over eighty engravings after Van Dyck, Correggio, Titian, Rosa, Raphael and others. In 1787 he was knighted by George III, the only engraver to receive such an honour in the eighteenth century.
