Jane Seymour (1509?-1537), Third Queen of Henry VIII

Sitter associated with 12 portraits
Jane Seymour was born at Wolf Hall, Wiltshire, probably in 1509. She was the sister of Edward Seymour, later Duke of Somerset, and Thomas Seymour, Lord High Admiral. She came to Henry VIII's notice as a lady-in-waiting, first to Catherine of Aragon and then to Anne Boleyn. Jane married the king in May 1536, less than a fortnight after Anne's execution, and in October 1537 she fulfilled Henry's most pressing ambition and gave birth to a son, later to become King Edward VI. Jane died twelve days later and was deeply mourned by Henry, who ordered that he would be buried beside her at Windsor.
