Hanif Kureishi

British-born of English and Pakistani descent, Kureishi rose to prominence with his screenplay My Beautiful Laundrette (1986) which daringly told the story of a gay British-Pakistani man's life in London in the 1980s. The film was a phenomenal success, it received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay and won the New York Critics' Best Screenplay Award (1987). Sammy and Rosie Get Laid followed (1988). His novel, The Buddha of Suburbia (1990) was later adapted for television. Kureishi's writing often focus on subcultures within British society, exploring themes such as identity and integration, and highlighting controversial issues surrounding race, class and sexuality. He published Nothing in 2017.
