Born in Glasgow, McComb studied at the Regional College of Art, Manchester and at the Slade (1956-60). He has taught widely in provincial art schools and at the Slade, Goldsmiths College and the Royal Academy Schools. His work was included in Kitaj's The Human Clay at the Hayward, 1976 and the following year had his first solo exhibition at the Coracle Press. He has exhibited work at the Venice Biennale, 1980, at the Hayward, 1981 and at the Tate in The Hard Won Image, 1984. He's had several solo exhibitions, including at the Serpentine, which then went on an Arts Council Tour, 1983-4, at the Royal Academy, 1983, and at the New York Studio School, 2000. He became a Royal Academician in 1990.
