John Richardson Jackson
(1819-1877), EngraverArtist associated with 63 portraits
In 1836 John Richardson Jackson became a pupil of Robert Graves, from whom he learned the technique of line engraving. He later abandoned this technique in favour of mezzotint engraving. Jackson came to prominence with his 1847 engraving of The Otter and Salmon, after Sir Edwin Landseer. For most of his career, Jackson concentrated on the engraving of portraits, although he also produced some landscapes and genre engravings. Between 1854 and 1876, he exhibited twenty-seven portrait engravings at the Royal Academy.
