Sir Robert Geoffrey Edwards

Sitter in 1 portrait
Medical researcher. In collaboration with British gynaecologist Patrick Steptoe, Edwards perfected in vitro fertilization (IVF) of the human egg. Their technique made possible the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first 'test-tube baby', on 25 July 1978. In 1980, Edwards and Steptoe founded the first IVF clinic, at Bourn Hall, Cambridge. Edwards was made a CBE in 1988 and Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in 1993.
