Sitter associated with 1 portrait
Viscountess Amberley was born and married into a political world. The daughter of politician Edward Stanley and women's education campaigner Henrietta Stanley, she became the stepdaughter of Prime Minister 1st Earl Russell through her marriage to John Russell. In 1871 she became President of the Bristol and West of England Women's Suffrage Society and the following year created the Ten Point Plan, demanding that the '...same wages should be given for the same work' and 'that there should be no legal subordination in marriage'. She offered a scholarship of £50 to women to study medicine and supported the education and work of Elizabeth Garrett, who became her personal physician.
