Henry Kitchener, the 3rd Earl Kitchener was the grandson of the 2nd Earl Kitchener who was the brother of the 1st (Your Country needs You!) Earl Kitchener. The first Earl had never married so the title moved 'sideways' when he died. The 3rd Earl never married either and when he died in 2011, the title died with him. The first Earl Kitchener was therefore his great uncle - not uncle. I served with him in the 1960's - he was then a major in the Royal Signals TA. Hated being referred to as 'Lord Kitchener' - "I'm the Earl Kitchener" he would say ! Happy days!
